It’s no secret that more than half of Texas K-12 students are struggling with math. The 2023 Spring STAAR results were encouraging, but Texas students are still scoring 7 percentage points behind the pre-pandemic state average.
They aren’t alone. Math scores are down all over the country. A recent EdWeek survey of K-12 officials revealed that math has been most impacted by learning loss, with 37% of respondents considering the problem severe.
Our students are struggling to build the mathematical confidence and resilience they need for academic success. When students achieve math fact mastery in developmentally appropriate ways, they build a positive mindset and confidence that propels them to math proficiency.
Sustained high engagement is crucial for fostering this mindset within the classroom. However, in a digital age where students have constant distractions, maintaining engagement is increasingly difficult.
So, how do we get through to these struggling students? We meet them where they’re at.
More than 90% of children older than 2 years play video games. These kids are used to taking risks and persevering through failure. They look for creative solutions, and they develop an automaticity that is critical for progressing through the gaming process.
Game-based learning is meant to bring the persistence that kids develop playing home-based video games into the classroom. Game-based learning offers a dynamic approach to education by incorporating elements of competition, collaboration, rewards, context, and immediate feedback to captivate students' attention and encourage them to persist through challenges.
Game-based learning accommodates diverse learning styles and preferences, promoting personalized learning experiences tailored to individual needs. In fact, a study by WestEd found that game-based learning has a positive impact on all subgroups of learners.
While traditional methods like written assignments and textbooks remain cornerstones of education, schools are embracing the rising tide of game-based learning, recognizing its power to boost engagement and academic success.
With its TEKS-aligned, adaptive, and individualized approach, Math Basecamp, part of the Legends of Learning ecosystem of game-based learning solutions, provides students with a fun and engaging platform to master essential math skills.

Math Basecamp is the only solution on the market that holistically addresses math fluency, including fluency foundation, mastery, and application.
Phase 1. Fluency Foundation
Lesson plans and games develop the foundations for fact fluency. These concepts and skills are essential for success even beyond fact mastery.
Phase 2. Math Fact Mastery
An adaptive program guides learners to master facts after developing concepts and fluency with counting and deriving techniques.
Phase 3. Fluency Application
Learners deploy mastered facts as they solve problems, transforming the experience from laborious trial and error to an engaging puzzle.
Dive deeper into the five critical steps of math fluency development in our guide to fact mastery.
While students move through Math Basecamp independently, teachers can simultaneously use the progress monitoring tools embedded within the program to further impact student success.
Reporting within Math Basecamp allows teachers to review individual student performance using the familiar fact table format or get an overall view of mastery using the fact family report.
The reporting allows teachers to be intentional about which students need encouragement and which need to be praised, further reinforcing that positive mindset that we know is critical for students to achieve in mathematics.
Student engagement with Math Basecamp leads to tangible results in the classroom. Teachers report significant improvements in students' math fluency and problem-solving abilities after incorporating Math Basecamp into their instruction.
Math Basecamp is part of the Legends of Learning ecosystem of game-based learning solutions. Learning Universe includes over 2,000 educational games and simulations, all designed to enhance and expand upon the standards being taught in class.
Awakening is a multiplayer world filled with extraordinarily fun, TEKS-aligned math and science experiences. Students enter Awakening after completing assigned activities, where they can play teacher-approved games that extend their learning — a true bell-to-bell experience!
